Every Labor Day weekend, Millennium Park becomes the setting for the Chicago Jazz Festival, a four-day event that offers jazz performances without an admission charge. The festival is organized by Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, with programming assistance from the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

Its lineup brings together musicians from Chicago and around the world while ranging across multiple forms of jazz. That combination gives the festival a broad musical identity: it is both a showcase for international artists and a public platform for the city’s jazz community.

The festival’s roots reach back to the years following Duke Ellington’s death in 1974. Singer and producer Geraldine de Haas led an event honoring Ellington in Grant Park, drawing more than 10,000 jazz fans. The gathering continued as an annual event and eventually attracted crowds of as many as 30,000 people.

A separate Grant Park festival honoring John Coltrane was organized in 1978. The following year, the Jazz Institute of Chicago began planning its own Grant Park festival. With three separate jazz festivals potentially scheduled for the same period at the end of August, the Mayor’s Office of Special Events intervened and brought the efforts together under one event: the Chicago Jazz Festival.

That first combined festival featured an Ellington Night and a Coltrane Night, along with five additional programs. The event was planned as a week of free jazz performances, establishing a central feature that remains part of the festival’s identity: making major live music available to the public without an admission fee.

The move from the festival’s early Grant Park setting to its current home in Millennium Park places the event within one of Chicago’s most prominent downtown public spaces. Its annual schedule also makes the Labor Day weekend a recurring moment for listeners to encounter both established jazz traditions and varied contemporary performances.

For Chicago audiences, the festival’s history is inseparable from the city’s role in sustaining jazz as a public cultural experience. What began as separate tributes to influential musicians became a unified city festival, supported by municipal cultural programming and the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Its continued format—free performances, local and international participation, and a wide range of jazz styles—keeps that shared civic purpose at the center of the event.
