For more than 50 years, Howard Brown Health has been a Chicago institution focused on the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ people. Founded in 1974, the nonprofit is based in the city and was named for Howard Junior Brown.

The organization provides health care in several areas of Chicago, with a focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities. Its work extends beyond clinical services: Howard Brown also supports programs related to housing, employment, food and education. The organization is among the largest health care and research providers in the United States dedicated primarily to LGBTQ+ communities.

That broader approach is especially visible through the Broadway Youth Center, which serves LGBTQ+ young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability. Alongside medical care, the center offers practical assistance intended to help young people navigate immediate needs and longer-term goals.

Services available through the Broadway Youth Center include support with health insurance, food benefits, shelter and job applications. The center also provides food, clothing and laundry services, as well as a safe place for LGBTQ+ youth seeking refuge and care. Educational support includes GED programming and tutoring for high school and college students.

Howard Brown’s work also reaches beyond its health centers through the Brown Elephant Resale Shops, which the organization owns. Together with the Broadway Youth Center, the shops are part of a network of services that connects health care with community support.

The organization’s history began in Chicago in 1974, when a group of medical students from the Chicago Gay Medical Association helped establish it. Since then, Howard Brown has developed into a prominent LGBTQ+-focused provider serving people across the city.

For Chicago’s LGBTQ+ residents, the organization represents a model of care that recognizes health as closely connected to housing, food access, education, employment and safety. Its programs are designed not only to address medical needs, but also some of the practical challenges that can affect a person’s ability to remain healthy and secure.

Howard Brown’s Chicago presence makes it a significant part of the city’s LGBTQ+ service landscape, particularly for young people facing homelessness or difficulty maintaining stable housing. Its combination of medical care, social services and community-based support reflects the organization’s longstanding focus on serving LGBTQ+ Chicagoans in multiple areas of their lives.
