Lamont J. Robinson Jr. has built a public career spanning Chicago neighborhoods, Springfield and the city’s higher-education system. He now serves as alderman of Chicago’s 4th Ward, a position he won in the 2023 election.

The 4th Ward includes portions of Douglas, Kenwood and the Near South Side. Those communities are part of a broader area Robinson has represented politically. From 2019 through 2023, he served in the Illinois House of Representatives for the 5th District, which included parts of the Near North Side, the Chicago Loop, the Near South Side, Douglas, Grand Boulevard and Greater Grand Crossing.

Robinson is openly gay and holds a notable place in Illinois LGBTQ history: He was the first openly LGBTQ African-American person to serve in the state legislature. His time in the House preceded his move into Chicago’s City Council, where his work is now centered on a ward that includes several communities on the South Side and near downtown.

Before and alongside his political work, Robinson developed a career in business and education. He owns two Allstate insurance agencies and teaches as an adjunct professor at various City Colleges of Chicago campuses. Those roles place his professional life within institutions that serve residents and students across the city.

In 2019, Robinson completed the Harvard Kennedy School’s program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. He participated through a David Bohnett Leadership Fellowship, a program connected to leadership development in government.

Robinson’s political trajectory reflects several layers of Chicago and Illinois civic life. His state legislative district connected downtown Chicago with neighborhoods on the city’s North and South sides. His current City Council role focuses more specifically on the 4th Ward, including Douglas, Kenwood and the Near South Side.

For LGBTQ Chicagoans, Robinson’s service is significant not only because he is openly gay, but also because of the racial and governmental milestones represented by his career. His election to the Illinois House marked a first for openly LGBTQ African-American representation in that chamber’s history, while his later election as 4th Ward alderman extended his public service into municipal government.

Robinson’s background in insurance, teaching and government gives him experience across private business, higher education and elected office. Together, those roles form the basis of his profile as a Chicago public official whose career has included both statewide representation and neighborhood-focused city leadership.
