Before The Advocate, Los Angeles’s PRIDE Took Gay Rights Into the Streets
Founded in Los Angeles in 1966, Personal Rights in Defense and Education challenged police pressure on gay gatherings and helped create a more confrontational model of LGBTQ+ activism.

In Los Angeles, a gay political organization founded in 1966 helped shift the way LGBTQ+ rights groups confronted power. Personal Rights in Defense and Education—known as PRIDE—rejected the restrained public posture associated with many earlier homosexual rights organizations and embraced visible, forceful protest.
Steve Ginsburg founded PRIDE in Los Angeles when he was 27. From the beginning, the group treated public demonstrations and political organizing as central to its work. Rather than relying primarily on quiet appeals or deferential engagement, PRIDE sought to confront opponents openly and draw attention to discrimination affecting gay people in the city.
A major focus was the Los Angeles Police Department’s treatment of gay gatherings and meetings between people of the same sex. PRIDE organized demonstrations against what it viewed as police oppression of those spaces. Its approach was intentionally loud and unapologetic, bringing disputes over policing and gay visibility into public view.
That strategy marked a departure from the more conservative methods associated with pre-1960s homosexual rights groups. PRIDE’s organizers believed that street protest and direct political action could challenge entrenched opposition more effectively than a quieter campaign. In doing so, the Los Angeles organization helped establish a more radical tone for later gay and LGBTQ+ movements.
The organization’s influence has been linked to groups and movements that followed, including the Gay Liberation Front, ACT UP and the Radical Faeries. Those movements differed in their goals, eras and organizing styles, but PRIDE is identified as an early example of the confrontational politics that became increasingly visible in gay activism.
PRIDE also left a mark on LGBTQ+ media. Its monthly newsletter began as a single-page publication. Over time, that project developed into The Advocate, described in the research as the nation’s longest-running gay news publication.
For Los Angeles LGBTQ+ history, PRIDE’s significance lies in the combination of protest and communication. The group challenged police conduct in the city while building a publication capable of carrying gay political news beyond its original local setting. Its story connects two enduring features of LGBTQ+ organizing: public resistance to institutions that impose discrimination, and independent media created to document and strengthen that resistance.
PRIDE’s 1966 founding places it within a period when gay political organizing was becoming more direct and visible. In Los Angeles, its willingness to protest in the streets offered an alternative to political caution and helped make confrontation itself part of the movement’s public language.
