Galen Center: A Major Gathering Place in Exposition Park
USC’s Galen Center brings basketball, volleyball, concerts, ceremonies and other large-scale events to the Figueroa Street corridor in Los Angeles.

At the southeast corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Figueroa Street, the Galen Center is one of the major indoor venues serving Exposition Park and the surrounding South Los Angeles community. Owned and operated by the University of Southern California, the facility sits across the street from USC’s main campus and near the Shrine Auditorium.
For LGBTQ Angelenos, the center is part of the city’s broader network of places where sports, entertainment, school traditions and public gatherings overlap. Its programming is not limited to one type of audience: the arena hosts USC athletics as well as concerts, theatrical productions, pageants, graduation ceremonies and academic competitions. That range makes the Galen Center a useful venue to know when navigating Los Angeles’s busy cultural and event landscape.
The building is best known as the home court for the USC Trojans basketball teams and the home venue for USC volleyball. It also accommodates CIF championships, high school graduation events and the Academic Decathlon. The annual Kids’ Choice Awards were staged there during several years in the 2010s, including 2011 through 2014, with the ceremony returning in 2017 and 2019.
The arena’s history reflects USC’s long effort to establish a dedicated indoor athletic facility. Before the Galen Center opened, USC basketball used several locations, including the stage at the neighboring Shrine Auditorium, the former Pan-Pacific Auditorium in the Fairfax District and, beginning in 1959, the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. Those earlier venues connected the university’s teams to different parts of the city, but none provided the same purpose-built home on the USC campus’s edge.
Momentum for a new arena accelerated in 2002, when banker and longtime USC supporter Louis Galen and his wife, Helene, donated $10 million toward the project. Their contribution helped move forward a plan that the university had pursued for more than a century.
Today, the Galen Center’s significance extends beyond USC athletics. Its location places it within an established Los Angeles event corridor, close to the Shrine Auditorium and the institutions and public spaces of Exposition Park. For residents looking for large-scale performances, collegiate sports or community ceremonies, the venue represents one of the city’s prominent indoor gathering spaces. Event details, ticket policies and accessibility information can vary by production, so visitors should consult the organizer before attending.
