Los Angeles is home to an annual gathering where drag performers, fans and LGBTQ+ communities meet under one roof: RuPaul’s DragCon LA. The expo debuted in 2015 as an outgrowth of the success of RuPaul’s Drag Race and has developed into a major celebration of drag culture, queer expression and community.
Organized by World of Wonder Entertainment, the Los Angeles production company behind RuPaul’s Drag Race and its related Drag Race programs, DragCon LA combines elements of a fan convention, marketplace and cultural festival. Attendees can meet former contestants from the series and other prominent drag artists, pose for photographs, get autographs and shop for merchandise. Some performers also appear onstage or participate in conversations with audiences.
The event’s programming extends beyond celebrity appearances. Panels have explored the practical and creative sides of drag, including clothing, fashion, wigs and makeup. Other discussions have taken on the history of drag, queer pop culture, drag activism, trans rights and political questions affecting LGBTQ+ people.
That range reflects drag’s place as both an art form and a way for people to express identity, challenge expectations and build community. A conversation about makeup or costume can sit alongside a discussion of LGBTQ+ rights, giving attendees opportunities to engage with drag as entertainment, history and activism.
DragCon LA is part of a larger international expansion of the Drag Race universe. Its sister event, RuPaul’s DragCon NYC, began in 2017. The conventions grew from a television franchise that also produced RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Drag Race Thailand and Chile’s The Switch Drag Race.
For Los Angeles, the expo also highlights the city’s connection to the production and business of contemporary drag. World of Wonder is based here, linking the local event to the company’s broader role in bringing drag artists and LGBTQ+ stories to audiences around the world.
While the convention offers fans access to performers they may know from television, its focus is broader than the show that inspired it. DragCon LA presents drag as a living culture with its own history, creative practices and political conversations. In that setting, a convention floor can become a place to celebrate performance, learn about queer communities and connect with people who share an interest in self-expression.
