Eric Denaud Green’s football story began in South Florida, long before he reached the NFL. Born March 16, 1982, the former cornerback attended Clewiston High School, where he played several positions and established himself as one of the area’s standout athletes.
Green contributed as a quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back during his high school career. As a senior, he earned All-State recognition after recording 1,100 passing yards and more than 400 rushing yards. His athletic range extended beyond football: he also competed in track and field and finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.3 seconds.
He continued his football career at Virginia Tech, playing for the Hokies. Over his college career, Green recorded 143 tackles, including 91 solo stops, along with 25 pass deflections and four blocked kicks. He also intercepted eight passes and returned them for 264 yards, a total that ranked third in school history at the time reflected in his player record.
The Arizona Cardinals selected Green in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he appeared in 12 games and started five. The following season, he played in 15 games and made eight starts, continuing his transition from a versatile Florida high school athlete into a professional defensive back.
Green’s professional football résumé also included time with the Miami Dolphins, as well as the San Francisco 49ers and the Omaha Nighthawks. The Dolphins connection gives his career a place in the broader history of football players with ties to the region, even though his NFL career began after his high school and college years elsewhere.
For Miami sports followers, Green represents a distinctly Florida-rooted path through the football system: early success in Clewiston, national recognition at Virginia Tech, an NFL draft selection and a later stop with the Dolphins. His career also illustrates the range of positions and skills that can shape a defensive back’s development, from quarterback and receiver responsibilities in high school to coverage, tackling and pass defense at the professional level.
