Fontainebleau is a census-designated place in Miami-Dade County, located about 10 miles west of downtown Miami. With 59,870 residents counted in the 2020 census, it is one of the larger communities in the county that does not operate as an incorporated city.

The community sits within the Miami metropolitan area and is bordered by several distinct municipalities and neighborhoods. Sweetwater is to the west, Doral lies to the north, and unincorporated Westchester is south of Fontainebleau. Its location places it in western Miami-Dade while keeping it within the broader orbit of Miami’s urban region.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Fontainebleau covers 4.15 square miles. Most of that area—3.96 square miles—is land. Water accounts for 0.10 square miles, or about 4.56 percent of the total area.

The name connects the community to Miami Beach’s Fontainebleau resort. The neighborhood’s development history also reflects the large-scale planning and real-estate ambitions that have shaped parts of South Florida. In 1970, Ben Novack, the original owner of the Miami Beach hotel, pursued plans for a planned golf course, resort and community that would be called Fontainebleau Park.

Those plans emerged in the context of development activity associated with Doris and Alfred Kaskel in Doral. Novack’s project later encountered financial difficulties. The planned community became connected to the hotel’s foreclosure in 1977, according to the historical account summarized for the area.

Trafalgar Developers subsequently continued developing the community under the Fontainebleau name. The neighborhood therefore carries a name linked to a prominent Miami Beach property while occupying a separate location in western Miami-Dade.

For residents and visitors navigating Miami-Dade, Fontainebleau is a useful reminder that the county’s geography is not defined only by incorporated city boundaries. The community directly meets cities such as Doral and Sweetwater while also bordering unincorporated Westchester. Its identity is rooted in both its census-defined status and its history as a planned development.

Fontainebleau’s location, size and development story place it within the evolving suburban landscape west of central Miami. The community’s name may evoke the beachfront resort, but its geography and local history are distinctly tied to inland Miami-Dade.
