Before Joe Grahe appeared in a Major League Baseball game, he was a University of Miami baseball player building a path from South Florida to the professional ranks.
Grahe, born August 14, 1967, grew up in West Palm Beach and played college baseball for Miami. His time with the Hurricanes preceded a seven-season MLB career that included stops with the California Angels, Colorado Rockies and Philadelphia Phillies.
His strongest major-league seasons came early in that career. From 1992 through 1994, Grahe recorded 45 saves for the Angels. He posted his highest single-season total in 1992, finishing with 21 saves.
Grahe made his major-league debut against the Oakland Athletics. During that appearance, he struck out Jose Canseco for his first big-league strikeout, an early milestone in a career that would span parts of seven MLB seasons.
After leaving professional baseball, Grahe returned to the University of Miami and completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration. His post-playing work has included real estate in the Palm Beach Gardens area and coaching baseball at multiple levels.
Grahe’s story connects several parts of South Florida’s baseball landscape: a West Palm Beach upbringing, college baseball in Coral Gables and a later professional career that took him across the major leagues. For Miami baseball fans, his career also offers a reminder of the university’s role in preparing players for the highest level of the sport.
He and his wife, Michelle Gangemi-Grahe, have two grown children, Parker and Mikki. Grahe remains connected to baseball through coaching, while also working as a realtor in Palm Beach Gardens.
His playing career included 45 saves during the Angels’ 1992–94 period, with the 1992 season standing out statistically. But the beginning of that journey remains local: Grahe developed as a college player at the University of Miami before reaching the majors and later returning to the school to finish his education.
