Tarell Alvin McCraney’s path from Miami’s Liberty City to major stages, film and television began with his education at New World School of the Arts.
McCraney attended the Miami school as a teenager and received an honorable mention in theater from the National YoungArts Foundation in 1999. During that period, he was also part of an improvisational troupe directed by Teo Castellanos.
He later studied acting at DePaul University’s Theatre School, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. McCraney went on to the Yale School of Drama, where he completed the playwriting program in 2007. He received the Cole Porter Playwriting Award when he graduated.
His work eventually reached a broad international audience through the 2016 film Moonlight. McCraney co-wrote the screenplay, which was based on his own play, and received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film marked a major expansion of his work beyond the stage while remaining connected to his beginnings as a playwright.
McCraney has continued working across formats. His credits include the screenplay for the 2019 film High Flying Bird and work on the 2019 television series David Makes Man. His theater career includes membership in the Steppenwolf Theatre Ensemble, and he serves as chair of playwriting at the Yale School of Drama.
In 2023, McCraney was appointed artistic director of the nonprofit Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles’s Westwood neighborhood. He began the role with the theater’s 2024–25 season.
For Miami audiences, McCraney’s career offers a notable example of the creative training and professional networks connected to New World School of the Arts. His early experience in local theater and improvisation preceded advanced study, award-winning screenwriting and leadership at a prominent nonprofit theater.
His biography also connects several parts of the performing-arts world: a Miami arts education, university and graduate theater training, ensemble theater, television, film and institutional leadership. While his later work has taken him far from South Florida, his early development remains rooted in the city, beginning with Liberty City and continuing through New World School of the Arts.
