For LGBTQ New Yorkers seeking health care in an affirming setting, Callen-Lorde Community Health Center offers a broad network of services rooted in the city’s LGBTQ communities.

The center’s main location is at 356 West 18th Street in Manhattan, with satellite sites in Brooklyn and The Bronx. Callen-Lorde provides primary care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. Its services include dental care, HIV and sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, mental health care, women’s health services, transgender hormone therapy and medical case management.

Behavioral health is also available through the Brooklyn Community Health Center, giving patients access to comprehensive mental health services beyond the organization’s Manhattan headquarters. The range of care reflects Callen-Lorde’s role as more than a general medical provider: patients can find several forms of physical, sexual and mental health support within an LGBTQ-focused health system.

Young people can receive care through Health Outreach to Teens, known as HOTT. The program serves patients ages 13 through 24 in a clinic located at Callen-Lorde and through a fully equipped medical van. Its mobile component allows the program to bring services beyond a fixed health-center location while maintaining its focus on LGBTQ youth.

Callen-Lorde is also home to the Cecilia Occupational Inclusion Network Clinic, or COIN Clinic. The clinic was founded by Cecilia Gentili, a late transgender icon, and is housed within the health center.

The organization’s name honors Michael Callen and Audre Lorde. Its work grew from a grassroots health-care tradition connected to New York’s LGBTQ communities, including the earlier St. Mark’s Community Clinic. Callen-Lorde is described as the only primary care center in New York City created specifically to serve LGBTQ communities.

For residents looking for care that includes primary medicine, sexual health, transition-related treatment and mental health services, Callen-Lorde’s locations across Manhattan, Brooklyn and The Bronx provide a citywide set of entry points. The organization’s mix of fixed clinics, specialized programs and a medical van is designed to meet patients at different stages of life and with varied health needs.
